(912-236-0363) offers multiple programs and operates neighborhood centers for seniors throughout the Savannah area. The organization's Learning Center provides classes, special programs, lunchtime lectures and travel excursions for active adults. Senior Citizens Inc. also helps seniors maintain independence with its Adult Daytime Care Centers and in-home nursing, personal- care, homemaking and companion services, home-delivered meals and care advisors. Smart Senior (912-352-4405), a program operated by the St. Joseph's/ Candler Health System, provides seniors with medical screenings, social and recreational opportunities, seminars on health and other topics, and other benefi ts. Tuition at state colleges and universities may be free (on a space-available basis) for those 62 and older. MILITARY RETIREES The area proves particularly attractive to military retirees. Savannah is home to Hunter Army Airfi eld, a large military installation that is part of the larger-still Fort Stewart in nearby Hinesville. The Savannah VA Outpatient Clinic provides primary care, mental health, physical therapy and the specialties of dermatology, gynecology, ophthalmology and podiatry. Savannah is also home to a wide array of social and service- oriented organizations for veterans.
