41 Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce 2018 Economic Trends 17 Industry: Military Ft. Stewart, located just outside of the Savannah MSA, and Hunter Army Airfield generate sufficient economic activity to warrant inclusion of Liberty and Long counties in the larger Savannah CSA. Ft. Stewart and Hunter AAF have an annual financial impact of $5 billion. Fort Stewart is the largest military installation east of the Mississippi River and covers nearly 279,000 acres with another 6,000 acres at Hunter Army Airfield. Ft. Stewart and Hunter AAF together are one of Coastal Georgia's largest employers. The ratio of military to civilian employees is approximately six to one, with 22,000 officers and enlisted military and 4,400 civilians employed at both installations. Ft. Stewart accounts for nearly three-fourths of the military employment in the area. The Savannah Air National Guard Base is at the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport. Based here are the 165th Airlift Wing, the 177th Air Control Squadron, and the Air Dominance Center. The mission focus is Air Mobility, delivering global air transportation of equipment and supplies during times of war and for peacetime training exercises, including transportation of military personnel and dignitaries anywhere in the world. Additional missions include Command and Control, Air Support Operations, Tactical Air Control Party and Individual Training. The Air Dominance Center is the premier fighter integration "combat air forces fight club" and is situated only 30 miles from the largest overwater military operations area along the East Coast. The direct expenditures of 165 th Airlift Wing are $78 million, 83% of which is compensation and allowances to military and civilian personnel. In 2017, the total economic impact was $133 million.
