32 Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce 2018 Economic Trends 8 Employment (By Place of Work) By Sector The Savannah MSA workforce increased 2.6% to 180,000 workers from 2016 to 2017. This represents a post- recession high watermark. Several sectors experienced significant growth in 2017, reflecting healthy business conditions in the region: construction and mining (+500 jobs, 7.4% growth), professional and business services (+1,100 jobs, 5.6% growth), and leisure and hospitality (+1,300 jobs, 5.0% growth). Also notable is the 4.5% increase (+300 jobs) in the wholesale trade sector. Education and health services added 1,000 jobs (+3.8%) in the past year. Nearly all sectors experienced growth from 2016 to 2017 except for transportation and utilities (-100), manufacturing (-200 jobs), and the information sector (-300 jobs). Federal government added 100 jobs from 2016 to 2017, while state and local government combined increased by 900 jobs (4.2% growth). Where the Jobs Are Nearly all post-recession job growth in the Savannah MSA has occurred in the private sector. Since 2011, employment in leisure/hospitality and education/health services have grown to become the largest segments of the regional economy. Other notable growth since 2011 has occurred in transportation/utilities, reflecting very strong growth in cargo handling at the Georgia Ports Authority terminals. Five sectors hold similar proportions of total employment in the Savannah MSA, further attesting to the area's healthy, diverse industry mix: leisure and hospitality (15.6%), education and health services (15.6%), state and local government (12.6%), professional and business services (11.8%) and retail trade (12.4%). Manufacturing accounts for 9.5% of the area's jobs.
