The Savannah Harbor Innovation Partnership (SHIP) is a public-private partnership dedicated to fostering innovation and attracting investment in the Savannah region. By leveraging the strengths of key local institutions and industry leaders, SHIP is the catalyst, creating a thriving innovation ecosystem that drives economic growth and transforms business challenges into game-changing opportunities. SHIP is a collaborative effort between Georgia Southern University, Savannah Economic Development Authority, and the Savannah Chamber of Commerce. DIVERSE MANUFACTURING & LOGISTICS From business jets and electric cars to sugar and construction equipment, Savannah's manufacturing sector is key to its economic vitality. The grand opening of the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America was held in March 2025. This $7.59 billion electric vehicle and hybrid plant in Bryan County is expected to generate 8,500 jobs at that plant alone and a total of 15,400 when the component manufacturers locating nearby are taken into consideration. Our port makes logistics and distribution a major industry here, and Chatham County and the surrounding area host massive distribution facilities for the nation's largest retailers. Among the newest is Amazon on a site off Interstate 16. A BUSTLING PORT The Port of Savannah helps drive Savannah's — and Georgia's — economy, steadily setting and then breaking volume records. The port is already the largest, fastest-growing and third-busiest container gateway in the country. With ambitious capacity expansion plans, major capital improvements are constantly under way at the Port of Savannah's two Georgia Ports Authority facilities, Ocean Terminal and the Garden City Terminal. Activity at the Port of Savannah and the Port of Brunswick, a sister GPA port halfway down the state's coast, plays a big role in the state been named the #1 state for business for the past 12 years by Area Development magazine.
