22 6 campus opens, it will house urgent care, occupational medicine and will have available space to expand into primary and specialty services in the future. In addition to healthcare offerings, the Development Authority of Bryan County will occupy 2,300 square feet. SJC will begin a new physician residency program in 2027 aimed at bolstering the critical need for doctors in southeast Georgia and the state. This new residency program will initially be backed by a $10 million grant from the state of Georgia to assist with the startup costs of the program. The two initial tracks of the new residency program will focus on the vital need for primary care physicians. There will be a total of 48 residency slots at capacity, but will expand to other residencies, such as cardiology fellowship, increasing the number of residents to 60. SJC has earned national recognition for its nursing excellence for the sixth time. The hospital was awarded the American Nurses Credentialing Center's (ANCC) Magnet Recognition® for outperforming standards on various measures including surgical outcomes, patient satisfaction with discharge education, nurse engagement, and workplace safety. Memorial Health has provided high-quality healthcare services since 1955, giving patients access to highly trained physicians and advanced technology. The flagship, Memorial Health University Medical Center, is a 711-bed teaching hospital and one of the region's leading acute care facilities, serving 35 counties in southeast Georgia and southern South Carolina. Located in Savannah, Georgia, Memorial Health is a regional referral center for heart care, cancer care, trauma care, children's care, high-risk pregnancies and high-risk newborn care. The hospital includes the region's only American College of Surgeons (ACS) verified Level 1 trauma center, DNV Healthcare certified comprehensive stroke center, ACS Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program accredited bariatric surgery program and recently earned accreditation from Surgical Reviewas a Center of Excellence in both hernia surgery and robotic surgery. Memorial also has the region's only children's hospital and its neonatal intensive care unit recently earned Level IV designation, which is the highest designation available. Memorial Health is also home to the region's only children's hospital and Level IV neonatal intensive care. The healthcare system boasts a growing primary and specialty care physician network and Consult-A-Nurse®, a 24-hour call center. Memorial Health has a major medical education program that trains physicians in six residency programs and three fellowship programs. A four-year medical school, Mercer University School of Medicine – Savannah, is also located on the Memorial Health campus. Military Fort Stewart along with Hunter Army Airfield serves as the Army's premier power projection platform on the East Coast. Over the past several years, the 3 rd Infantry Division has been undergoing a modernization program to become the most powerful division in the U.S. Army. The Department of Defense, with Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield, is the largest employer in Coastal Georgia. In 2025, there were approximately 29,000 military personnel and federal government workers in the Savannah combined statistical area. The regional economic footprint is substantial as total annual economic impact is approximately $6 billion. Elements of the 3rd Infantry Division were deployed to eastern Europe for nine months as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve. More than 3,000 soldiers from the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team had been stationed across eastern Europe, strengthening NATO's eastern flank before returning in September 2025. The Division's 1 st Armored Brigade Combat Team completed an intense urban rifle marksmanship training at Camp Reedo, Estonia alongside soldiers from 5th Squadron and 7th Cavalry Regiment in March 2025. The soldiers navigated complex urban environments, engaging targets with precision and speed. Participating in these exercises was a testament to the Army's commitment to building a more lethal force, ready to respond to any threat. The Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport hosts the Savannah Air National Guard Base. The 165 th Airlift Wing, 117 th Air Control Squadron, and 156 th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron, based out of Charlotte, NC, operate from the airbase.
