Stephens-Day Tax Exemption
In Chatham County, as the value of a primary residence
grows, the homeowner receives a matching tax exemption.
This effectively freezes county property taxes at the original
sale date for as long as a resident owns their home, and also
impacts city and school taxes. When the homeowner sells the
property, the tax value resets to the current market value and
the cycle begins again. Known as the Stephens-Day Exemption,
this popular provision helps keep long-time residents from
