52 Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce 2021 Economic Trends 8 Employment (By Place of Work) By Sector The Savannah MSA workforce decreased 3.7% to 179,780 workers from 2019 to 2020. Many sectors experienced decline in 2020, reflecting cutbacks brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic: Leisure & Hospitality (-5,200 jobs, a decrease of 19%), Information (-400 jobs, down 14%), and Retail Trade (-1,200 jobs, down 5.5%). Nearly all sectors experienced loss from 2019 to 2020 with the exception of Construction (+100 jobs), Federal Government (+100 jobs) and Education and Health Services (no change in employment). Where the Jobs Are Nearly all post-recession job growth in the Savannah MSA has occurred in the private sector. Since 2014, employment in leisure/hospitality and education/health services have grown to become the largest segments of the regional economy. Other notable growth since 2014 has occurred in transportation/utilities (+32% from 2014), reflecting very strong growth in cargo handling at the Georgia Ports Authority terminals. Five sectors hold similar proportions of total employment in the Savannah MSA, further attesting to the area's healthy, diverse industry mix: education and health services (14.8%), leisure and hospitality (12.2%), retail trade (11.5%), and professional and business services (11.5%), state and local government (11.3%). Manufacturing accounts for 10.1% of the area's jobs.
