58 Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce 2020 Economic Trends 8 Employment (By Place of Work) By Sector The Savannah MSA workforce increased 0.9% to 185,400 workers from 2018 to 2019. This represents a post- recession high water mark. Several sectors experienced significant growth in 2019, reflecting healthy business conditions in the region: information (+100 jobs, 5.6% growth), manufacturing (+1,000 jobs, 5.5% growth), and federal government (+100 jobs, 3.4% growth), and wholesale trade (+200 jobs, 3.1% growth). Nearly all sectors experienced growth from 2018 to 2019 except for professional and business services (-1,500 jobs) and state and local government (-300 jobs). Where the Jobs Are Nearly all post-recession job growth in the Savannah MSA has occurred in the private sector. Since 2013, employment in leisure/hospitality and education/health services has grown to become the largest segments of the regional economy. Other notable growth since 2013 has occurred in transportation/utilities, reflecting very strong growth in cargo handling at the Georgia Ports Authority terminals. Five sectors hold similar proportions of total employment in the Savannah MSA, further attesting to the area's healthy, diverse industry mix: leisure and hospitality (14.7%), education and health services (14.4%), retail trade (12.2%), state and local government (11.6%), and professional and business services (10.7%). Manufacturing accounts for 10.4% of the area's jobs.
